ISSA Names New CEO, Eyes Wellness Expansion

Warren Heffelfinger’s vision includes course expansion, strategic partnerships and digital transformation to help fitness certification organization reach 100 million people by 2030

The International Exercise Science Association (ISSA) has hired Warren Heffelfinger as its new CEO as the organization prepares for its next phase of growth in the education of fitness, health and wellness professionals.

Andrew Wyant, CEO of ISSA since 2018, will transition to chief growth officer, leading sales, marketing and business development. He will also remain on the board.

Heffelfinger’s strategic vision for ISSA also includes expanding the organization’s curriculum into emerging health areas.

“I think we’ve learned more about health in the last ten years than we have in the last hundred years,” he said. “We have seen a significant evolution in what constitutes health – from basic nutrition and exercise to a holistic approach that encompasses mind, body and spirit,” he said.

ISSA’s expansion plans include not only delving more deeply into existing categories such as personal training and nutrition, but also exploring specialty and adjacent areas such as brain health and functional aging.

“We don’t just teach fitness; we teach fitness. We’re reaching far beyond our immediate interactions,” Heffelfinger emphasizes.

When asked how ISSA will achieve its mission of reaching 100 million people by 2030, Heffelfinger said that ultimately, it starts with a multi-pronged approach to supporting the people serving their respective communities.

“We need to identify a number of marketing-led partnerships to reach a wider audience,” he said. “This is not just about personal training in general but across all sub-specialties.
